Do you remember the story of Dumbo, the flying elephant? For the younger generations here is a quick recap. There was a baby elephant born in the circus. He had huge ears and was often made fun of because they were so big. Long story short, a friendly crow gifts him a feather and Dumbo learns that he can use his big ears to fly but he thinks that his flying ability is tied to the feather. The big lesson comes when he has to save the day without his “magical” feather and finds out that he can fly all on his own. The feather never had any magic, it just gave him confidence, the ability to fly was all his own. Why am I telling you about a flying elephant? Because there sometimes seems to be a confusion about our connection with Spirit. Like Dumbo, too many of us give power to things outside ourselves as the reason for our ability to be in contact with Spirit in a deeper or more meaningful way. We think that the “feather” of – medicine, meditation, nature, crystals, etc – is what connected us and that without that tool or person or medicine our connection breaks down, diminishes or is inaccessible. That is not to say that these different tools can’t be helpful or good reminders or healthy practices, but they don’t create or maintain the connection. You do! Remember that you, me, all of us are swimming in Spirit constantly. We are breathing it, eating it, living it constantly. There is nothing that is not Spirit. You are not a human with a spirit living inside. You are a Spirit with a human inside. Read that again! You need nothing outside of you to connect. By your very existence you ARE connected. You may need to be reminded of that or learn to trust and allow it, but the connection is there…Always. Those external tools, experiences, people are just arrows pointing back at you, illuminating the truth that you have everything you need to be as connected as you want to be. So, the next time you think you need something outside yourself to connect. Stop. Close your eyes and remind yourself – I am Spirit and Spirit is me; I am always connected. Then allow that energy of connection into your experience. Remember that in the beginning it may be a very subtle connection and energy. Trust it and yourself. The more you allow, the more you invite and trust, the more overt the communication/connection. Use those external tools to help but never mistake them for more than they are. Remember they are just plain old feathers. It’s you who is magic – now fly! |
